Simple home solutions to keep your property in top shape
Scratches on leather chairs
Pets are great, but they can cause your furniture to suffer! If you have minor scratches on your leather suite, try rubbing orange oil into them as this conditions the leather and will reduce their appearance. Often, scratches have only removed the colour rather than actually tearing the leather, so a marker pen or shoe polish that matches the leather will make the marks almost disappear.
Crayon artwork on your walls
If your kids are reaching that creative age and you’re finding more and more crayon masterpieces on your walls, try aiming a hairdryer at them and then wiping them away with a damp cloth. For smaller crayon efforts or pencil drawings, you can’t beat a good old eraser.
Scuff marks on vinyl floors
Try spraying WD40 on the scuff marks, with a bit of elbow grease you should be able to remove them completely.
Draughty windows
The putty around windows can often rot away over the years. Replacing it could reduce the drafts and damp over the drizzly winter months.
Apply bleach to the old putty to soften it, then gently chisel it out, being careful not to damage the surrounding wood. Roll the new putty into
a long sausage, and push it into the gaps with your fingers. To neaten it up, use a putty knife to smooth it out.
Repairing nail holes
Changed your mind about where that picture should be hung? If you’ve removed a nail from the wall and are feeling a bit disgruntled about the remaining hole, you can easily patch it up. Clean away any dust, taking care not to make the hole any bigger. Carefully fill the hole with a suitable filler – always read the labels to find the best filler for your wall type. Toothpicks are great for getting the hole filled without creating a mess on the surrounding wall. You might have to re-fill the hole once it dries as filler can shrink. Then gently sand the area using circular motions to smooth
it over and finish it off with a lick of paint.
Spilt wax on your carpet
Scrape the excess off using a blunt knife then lay a piece of brown paper over the remaining wax. Run an iron over the top and as the wax melts
it will be absorbed into the paper, removing it from your carpet. |
