Or perhaps you just feel things are starting to look a bit grubby and need a new lease of life. Well, whatever your reason for getting into a bit of decorating, have a read of our tips to learn a few tricks of the trade.
Out with the old...
Since not everyone has the luxury of a wall-paper steamer, here are a few hints on how to get that old wallpaper down as easily as possible.
• Before you start soaking your walls, gently score the paper from ceiling to floor to create strips.
• Soak the wall once, then go back and soak it again giving the water time to penetrate the paper and soften the glue.
• When you come to scrape the paper away, start from the bottom and work your way to the top, removing one of your scored strips at a time.
• Remember to switch the electricity supply off before removing any lightswitch covers to get to the paper behind them.
Add a splash of colour to your rooms...
Painting can be a bit tricky, but if you choose the right colours and allow yourself the time to do the job properly you can really add to the atmosphere of the space.
• If your rooms feel a bit small, try using light colours to create the illusion of space. Darker colours will make spaces seem more closed in, creating a more intimate and cosy atmosphere.
• Give hallways more width by using lighter colours on the long walls.
• Add height to a room with a white ceiling, or using vertical stripes within your choice of wall pattern.
• If your walls are a bit uneven, choose a matt finish emulsion as this will show up less of the imperfections than a silk finish.
• If you’re going to apply a second coat, give the first one plenty of time to dry. Wrap your brushes in cling film to prevent them drying out and they’ll be just as soft when you come to use them over the next few days.
• Runs and drips in paint are caused by applying too much. Use the paint sparingly and always finish with an upwards brush stroke.
Top tip!
Stupid fly gone and got itself stuck on your new paintwork? Rather than trying to remove it while the paint is wet, let it dry and wipe the fly away the next day with a damp cloth. You won’t even see the mark where it landed.
Line your paint trays with foil so at the end of the day you can just remove it and throw away, saving yourself a cleaning job.
