Before you lose the power...
Prepare yourself with a basic knowledge of how your property is wired so you know what to do if something goes wrong.
Know your fuse box
All electrical systems in properties have a central fuse box. If you’ve suddenly lost power in your house or building, it’s like that something has caused the fuse to break the circuit. This can often be because a faulty electrical appliance has caused a surge in power which would cause the
fuse to ‘trip’ or switch off. It’s a safety feature to prevent electrical fires occurring from the system becoming overloaded.
Make sure you know where your fuse box is, and keep a torch next to it. Spend a few minutes working out which switch relates to each circuit in your house, so you know which one to reset when you lose power. It’s a good idea to label the switches/fuses.
Making it safe
Know how to turn the electrical supply to your house or property off. Electrical problems are often complicated, and can be dangerous, so we’ d
like to stress that it’s not wise to try and repair things yourself unless you know what you’re doing. You can get a nasty shock from exposed wires
or could even end up with a fire breaking out. If a situation has occurred where there is a fire risk, exposed wires, liquid coming into contact with electricity or any danger to you, the safest thing to do is shut off the power and call us out straight away. Remember, your safety should always come first!
Don’t stay in the dark
Just in case you do lose power at some point, always keep a few candles and a lighter or matches in an easy to find place. It’s a good idea to keep our number there too just in case it is something more than a local power cut or blown fuse and you need a helping hand to restore your power.
Never overload sockets
We’ve all done it, added an adapter to a socket because there just aren’t enough holes in the wall to accommodate all aspects of the home cinema system. But, it’s things like this that cause circuits to overload and can even cause electrical fires to break out. Resist overloading sockets and find ways to spread you electrical appliances out so you made use of other sockets rather than having everything powered from the same source. If
you just don’t have enough sockets in the house, give us a call. We can give you a free estimation for installing a few new power points and
solving the problem safely.
Always losing power?
If your fuse or circuit breaker is tripping regularly, do not be tempted to replace it with a larger one. These items are safety products that are designed to prevent more serious problems occurring from electrical faults. If they are regularly tripping, it’s likely there is a problem with your
circuit. You need to get this fixed as soon as possible, so call us, and we’ll get a professional, qualified and experienced electrician out to you. If
the power always cuts out just as you switch on a certain appliance, then the problem is most likely to be a fault with that item, so it might be
time to invest in a new one...
How to... Change a light bulb
It’s the simplest things that can be a headache. Keep a few things in mind when you’re replacing a blown bulb to make sure it’s merely a moment’s work and not a nightmare.
First things first, turn the light off at the switch. If you’re changing a bulb that is out of reach make sure you use a stable stepladder and take
care when climbing it. Statistics say that 90,000 people end up in hospital from ladder falls every year – don’t be one of them! If possible, make
sure someone else is around to hold the ladder steady for you. Make sure the bulb has cooled down before touching it. If it’s just blown it will be
very hot. Ensure you replace the bulb with one of the same wattage, bulb sockets are designed to tolerate a certain amount of power and it’s dangerous to install a higher watt bulb.
Save the environment – and your pennies!
We’re all aware that we should be making efforts to save energy. There are a few very simple measures you can take to reduce your electricity
bill and do your bit to help the environment.
Don’t leave things on standby
Your TV, router, computer or other appliances still use about 85% of their full power when they’re left on standby. Switch them off with the main power button, or even at the plug for a dramatic reduction in your energy usage.
Invest in some energy saving light bulbs
They might seem expensive initially, but low energy light bulbs last over ten times longer and use 4 times less energy than a traditional bulb, so they’ll save you a lot of money in the long run.
Use the sun!
It may be a rare visitor to London, but when the sun does make an appearance make the most of it and get your washing dry the natural way
rather than using your tumble dryer.
Tea for two
When you’re boiling the kettle, only fill it with the amount of water you need. You’d be amazed how much electricity a kettle uses! So the easier
you make its job, the more energy efficient you’re being.
Keep cool
Never put warm food into the fridge as it’ll have to work harder to keep the temperature down. Your fridge is the highest user of electricity in
your kitchen, so make sure the door is always properly shut and the seals are working. If it seems to be making a lot of noise, it’s working harder
to reduce the temperature inside, which means it’s using more electricity.
Give your freezer a break
Make sure you defrost your freezer regularly. The ice build-up will affect how efficiently it is working, and can even reduce how effective the door seals are meaning it will be forever fighting to keep your food frozen. |
